Rugby League - Home

Explosive speed, agility, power, endurance and fitness - these are just some of the skills needed by today's elite rugby league player. Sports science and sports medicine are also playing a major role in the modern game, helping players find new and more effective ways of developing fitness, recovering more quickly post-match and analysing performance. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Rugby League program is at the cutting edge of these techniques both domestically and internationally.

About AIS Rugby League

The Rugby League program is jointly funded by both the AIS and the Australian Rugby League. It aims to provide a rugby league education to regional and rural elite rugby league players in Years 11 and 12 in order to bridge the gap in learning opportunities that currently exists between country and city-based elite players.

In doing so, the program provides talented players with an alternative to leaving home to pursue a rugby league career before they have finished Year 12. The program believes that it is in the best interests of the country-based player, his family and his home town if the player remains in his home environment until he finishes his schooling.

A maximum of 30 players can be on scholarship at any one time. Scholarships are offered initially for 12 months, but the program is designed for completion over two years so that those who enter it as Year 11 students are eligible for a second year on scholarship providing their attitude and development warrants re-selection. Selection into the program is based on the quality of the player's performances in schoolboy and club representative football.
