Search tips

Information on how to search the following databases: NSIC Catalogue, AIS Sports Science Publications and SportScan Article Database.

NSIC Catalogue

The following search tips will help you search the catalogue more effectively.

Step one

Determine if you require all types of information - books, articles, videos or specific information. Select the appropriate type menu tab at the top of the catalogue

Step two

Boolean operators can be used to broaden or narrow searches. This allows you to access more records.

Use the AND operator to locate records containing all of the specified search terms

For example;

  • 'altitude swimming' will return 12 records
  • 'altitude AND swimming' will return 27 records

If you know the exact title of a book, journal or video do not use 'AND'. For example a search on the title of a book should be 'Textbook of sports medicine'. If your search is unsuccessful then try using 'AND' with the search terms ' textbook AND sports AND medicine'.

Use the OR operator to locate records matching any or all of the specified terms

For example;

  • boxing and (coaching or training)
  • (swimming or running) and altitude

Use the NOT operator to locate records containing the first search term but not the second

For example;

  • hockey NOT ice - to exclude ice hockey
