How do I find information on the Australian Institute of Sport?

  • Australian Institute of Sport for all information on the AIS including the history, sports, sports science, athletes and information on scholarships.

How do I find information on an Australian athlete?

If it is a current athlete or an athlete that has recently retired try our Australian athlete profiles page.

  • If it is an Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) athlete, try the athlete profiles under the appropriate sport.
  • To find information on significant athletes in various sports try our Halls of Fame page to select your sport.

How do I find out what the Australian Sports Commission does?

How are sports funded?

  • The ASC Annual Report is a valuable document for information about how much money recognised sports have recieved from the ASC, as well as other grants, funding and program information. To find out if a sport is recognised you can search the Australian Sports Directory.

How do I find information on a sport I like?

  • For information about specific sports, such as rules, contacts and how they are organised or funded, you can search for the National Sporting Organisation details using the Australian Sports Directory.
  • For more detailed information join the Clearinghouse for Sport and visit the A-Z of Sports and Sport Organisations.

What's the history of sport in Australia?

  • Information on the history and sociology of sport can be found from LA84 Foundation, an excellent site which provides online access to articles from Australian Society for Sports History Bulletin, Sporting Traditions (Australia), Olympic Review, Olympika, Journal of Olympic History, Journal of Sport History. After entering this site, enter the keywords and click on search.

How can I find more information?

  • NSIC Catalogue and SportScan Database includes references to sport science, coaching and administration articles held by the National Sport Information Centre. After identifying articles from the database, copies can be requested through the NSIC. Visit the Ordering Articles section for more information.
  • Books and videos are available to borrow directly through the Clearinghouse for Sport by employees of the following organisations:
    • Australian Sports Commission
    • National and State Sporting Organisations
    • State Institutes and Academies of Sport
    • State Departments of Sport and Recreation

  • For other members of the public, books and videos may only be requested from the NSIC collection through their local, school or university library (charges may apply).
  • The SportDiscus, MEDLINE, Psychology and Behavioural Sciences, ANZ Reference Centre and E-Journal databases are available through the Clearinghouse for Sport to employees of the following organisations:
    • Australian Sports Commission
    • National and State Sporting Organisations
    • State Institutes and Academies of Sport
    • State Departments of Sport and Recreation
  • AUSPORT and SPORTDiscus are major literature research databases for sport related information and are available at many university libraries in Australia. If you are unable to access these databases through the Clearinghouse for Sport, enquire at your university, school or local library. After identifying articles from the database, copies can be requested through the NSIC. Visit the Ordering Articles section for more information.
