The United States took gold in a world record time of 3:29.34 giving Michael Phelps a record breaking eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics.

The Australian team of Brenton Rickard (AIS), Hayden Stoeckel, Eamonn Sullivan and Andrew Lauterstein also broke the previous world record with a time of 3:30.04.

AIS swimmers Adam Pine and Ashley Delaney represented Australia in the heat swim.

It was Rickard’s second silver medal of the Olympic meet having previously finished second in the men’s 200m breastroke final.

For the first time in Olympic history the Australian Team won a medal in all six relay events. Further, the Australian Women’s 4x100m Medley relay team became the first Australian relay team to successfully defend their Olympic title.
