The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) is pleased to announce the AIS Men’s and Women’s Basketball program scholarship holders for 2009.

Thirty five scholarships in total have been granted, with 17 for the men's program and 18 for the women's program.

The AIS Men’s and Women’s programs, established in 1981, are recognised as two of the world’s leading basketball development programs.

AIS Director Professor Peter Fricker says the Institute, in partnership with Basketball Australia, is continuing to help strengthen Australian Basketball through the development of talented junior athletes.

‘The AIS Basketball program aims to teach outstanding juniors the mental and physical skills needed to perform at league, national and international levels,’ Professor Fricker said.

‘We are extremely proud of our record and tradition of producing talented basketball players who have gone on to excel at the elite level of the game.’

Some of Australia’s best men and women’s basketball players have come through the AIS Basketball program. They include Lauren Jackson, Shelley Sandie, Shelley Hammonds, Andrew Bogut, Luke Schenscher, Shane Heal, Luc Longley and Mark Bradtke.
