Two of the Australian Institute of Sport’s Best of the Best athletes, Todd Woodbridge and Alisa Camplin, have been inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame is Australian sport’s most prestigious club. It recognises Australian athletes who have achieved excellence at the highest level of their sport.

Camplin and Woodbridge were honoured alongside former Bronco’s half-back Allan Langer, swimmer Ian Thorpe and baseballer David Nilsson.

Camplin began her challenging career as an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder back in 1998.

She was Australia’s first female aerial skier to win Olympic gold at the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics and the only female in 2008 to be inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

Tennis legend Woodbridge also began his illustrious career as an athlete at the Australian Institute of Sport. At just 13, Woodbridge accepted the challenge from then head coach Ray Ruffles which saw him transfer from juniors into the opens.

‘The AIS and Ray played a huge role for me,’ admits Woodbridge.

Woodbridge won 61 doubles titles with partner Mark Woodforde, including 11 grand slam crowns and a gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games.

The Sport Australia Hall of Fame also announced its scholarships to help fund, encourage and support Australia's next generation of sporting talent.

AIS athletes Kurt Mulcahy (athletics), Casey Eastham (hockey) and Jack Bobridge (cycling) were among some of Australia's best young sporting talent to be awarded Sport Australia Hall of Fame scholarships.

Scholarship recipients receive $5000 in funding and support for training and development plus mentoring and guidance for 12 months by an Australian sporting great who is a member of the Hall of Fame.

The Director of the Australian Institute of Sport, Professor Peter Fricker, said he was very proud of Camplin and Woodbridge as well as the AIS program.

‘To see these two former scholarship athletes become inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame is a real testament to their personal commitment to their sport and the training program we have here at the AIS.’
