Christine's golden leap
AIS scholarship holder Christine Wolf has stunned herself and her opponents to win gold in the women’s long jump at the Beijing Paralympic Games.
Wolf, who came to Australia three years ago and liked the country so much she stayed and became an Australian citizen produced an incredible leap of 3.73m.
The above the knee amputee (F42), who won silver in the same event in Athens in 2004 as a member of the German team, dedicated the victory to her coach Iryna Dvoskina and the training system at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
“This is quite unbelievable, I really can’t quite take it in,” Wolf said.
“It’s not so much winning, but winning as a Australian in my first time as a member of the Australian team.”
“Competing for Germany I felt I was operating as an individual, but competing for Australia I felt I was a member of a team and that is so satisfying.”
“The training has been tough from start to finish, and relentless, but out of that has come a sense of empowerment and a feeling of belonging to something larger.”
“I have to say I felt weird on the podium as the Australian anthem was played, but it was also very emotional.”
Wolf defeated Holland’s Annette Rozen (3.63 metres) and Poland’s Ewa Zielinska (3.62 metres).
She will compete in the 100m sprint on the weekend.
Meanwhile, AIS visting athlete Paul Raison has won a silver medal with a seasons best throw of 15.83m in the shot put.
