Stamps mark Australia's Olympic glory
Australia Post recently launched a set of large replicas of commemorative stamps at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to mark the great feats and successes of our record-breaking gold medal heroes at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Four members of Australia's victorious women's 4x100m freestyle relay team are among Olympians to feature on the stamps. Stephanie Rice, Bronte Barratt, Kylie Palmer and AIS scholarship holder Linda MacKenzie grabbed the gold at the Beijing Olympics beating the Chinese and American teams in world record time.
Acting AIS Director Phil Borgeaud said the AIS is thrilled to be able to celebrate Australia’s sporting successes with Australia Post and the National Portrait Gallery.
‘It’s great that Australians can share in our gold-medal performances by purchasing a stamp just 48 hours after the medal is awarded,’ Borgeaud said.
Olympic swimming gold medallist and former AIS athlete Petria Thomas also looked back with fond memories of her great performances in the pool.
‘When I was put on the stamp it felt fantastic to share one of my greatest sporting moments with my family and friends and the whole of Australia,’ said Thomas.
