AIS scholarship holder Amy Steel has been named in the Australian Diamonds netball squad for the Holden Test Series against New Zealand Silver Ferns.

Steel was impressive throughout the World Youth Netball Championships (WYNC), which Australia won 64–46 against New Zealand.

‘It’s a brilliant opportunity for Amy,’ Diamonds Coach Norma Plummer said.

‘I think she is a hugely talented player and she put out a great performance against Silver Ferns shooter Paula Griffin at the WYNC.

‘I’ve been looking at targeting her for quite some time and I am very happy about including her in the line-up for tonight’s match against the World team and the series against New Zealand.

‘We have a very young defence end with not much international experience but the enthusiasm within the group is just fantastic.

‘We are ready to step up and they are ready to tackle this big challenge.’

The Holden Netball Test Series against New Zealand commences in Sydney on Sunday, before moving onto Melbourne (Wednesday 9 September) and Brisbane (Sunday 13 September).

Meanwhile, the AIS have a big weekend of matches coming up in the Australian Netball League.

The undefeated Institute travel to Tasmania where they play the home team on Friday night (7.30pm) before taking on Victoria Fury in a repeat of last year’s grand final on Saturday (6.30pm).

The AIS round off their road trip to Tasmania by taking on South Australia on Sunday at 10.45am.
