Australia claims top three places at world canoe slalom championships
Australian Institute of Sport athletes Leanne Guinea, Rosalyn Lawrence and Jessica Fox have claimed the gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the women’s C1 event at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in La Seu d’Urgell, Spain, on Sunday 13 September.
Guinea had the best total time in the final run of the women’s C1 event: 137.80 seconds with just one penalty. Lawrence won second place after a clean final run, recording a time of 143.10 seconds, and Jessica Fox finished third in 145.41 seconds, without penalty.
The women’s C1 discipline was accepted as a demonstration event at the 2009 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships and is currently being considered for official admission in the 2010 championships.
Other AIS canoeists Sarah Grant and Kate Lawrence also performed well at the world championships, finishing 19 and 20, respectively, in the women’s K1 event, after both being knocked back by 50-second penalties.
