Australian Institute of Sport race walkers named in 2010 World Cup team
Four Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) athletes, Jared Tallent, Chris Erickson, Nathan Deakes and Luke Adams, have been named in the national team for the IAAF World Race Walking Cup, which will take place in Chihuahua, Mexico on 15–16 May 2010.
Olympic silver medallist Jared Tallent represents one of Australia’s best chances to win in the 2010 World Cup. Earlier this year, he won the Australian 50km Road Walk Championship with a personal best of 3 hours, 38 minutes, 56 seconds.
Shortly after winning the national race in Melbourne’s Faulkner Park on 22 November, Tallent mentioned he was already thinking ahead to next year’s World Cup.
’I’m looking for a medal at the next year [in Mexico] and today’s result is the ideal start to what will be a tough training schedule between now and then.’
National walking team member Tom Barnes has also been announced as part of the Australian team at next year’s World Cup. The Victorian finished second behind Tallent in the 50km Australian championship race, with a time of 4 hours, 12 minutes, 5 seconds.
