Strong Australian squash squad named
Squash Australia has named its 2009 World Games squad, which is dominated by Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) scholarship holders, including Scott Arnold, Lisa Camilleri, Amelia Pittock and world number 13 Kasey Brown.
The World Games — which this year take place in Kaohsiung, Taiwan from 16–26 July — feature sports that are not part of the current Olympic Games program, and Squash Australia CEO Gary O’Donnell is hoping that Australia’s strong squad will provide an argument for squash’s inclusion in the 2016 Olympic Games.
‘Squash is played in every major multi-sports event in the world apart from the Olympics. The World Games provide an ideal opportunity to show International Olympic Committee delegates that squash is a natural fit for the Olympics,’ O’Donnell said.
The World Games are held in the year following the Olympic Games and form an important lead-up event to the Commonwealth Games. Since the first World Games in 1981, the event has grown from 18 sports and 1265 athletes to an estimated 4500 athletes and 31 sports.
Six of this year’s sports — karate, golf, roller sports, rugby sevens, softball and baseball — will be vying with squash for one of two available places at the 2016 Olympic Games.
