The Australian Opals women’s basketball team has won a bronze medal at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia, after defeating the Czech Republic on Saturday 11 July.

The Australians led from the start, establishing a five-point lead at the first break (26–21). The Czech Republic fought back to only three points down (39–36) at half-time but the Australians continued strongly to win the game by 11 points (88–77).

Several former AIS basketballers were among the top scorers in the match, including Elyse Penaluna (28 points and 16 rebounds) and Marianna Tolo (19 points and 13 rebounds).
