Big wins for AIS swimmers at 2009 Speedo International meet

Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) swimmer Tommaso D’Orsogna has won the 100-metre men’s freestyle final at the 2009 Speedo AIS International in Canberra on 26 November.

D’Orsogna recorded 49.13 seconds in the 100-metre dash, nudging out team-mates Cameron Prosser (49.25) and Ashley Delaney (49.75). Former world champion Eamon Sullivan finished in eighth place (51.37).

Merindah Dingjan took out the women’s 200-metre freestyle final recording a time of 1 minute 59.32 seconds, while promising youngster Thomas Fraser-Holmes won the men’s 400-metre freestyle (3:55.47) ahead of AIS team-mate Kirk Palmer (3:55.60).

Belinda Hocking proved too strong for the competition in winning the 200-metre women’s backstroke in 2:12.21 and Sally Foster (AIS) edged out Sophie Edington to win the 50-metre freestyle Monaco in 24.85 seconds.

There were runner-up places for AIS swimmers Ashley Delaney (100-metre backstroke: 55.48 and 50-metre backstroke Monaco: 25.17) and Alicia Coutts (200-metre individual medley: 2:13.24).   

The highlight of the meet was Ashley Callus (Queensland) recording a new Australian record in the 50-metre men’s freestyle. Callus defeated Matthew Abood (New South Wales) in a sizzling 21.19 seconds.
