Bobridge wins double national titles
Australian Institute of Sport cyclist and rising star Jack Bobridge continues to impress and excel, winning double national titles in the men’s under-23 races of the Scody Australian Open Road Cycling Championships.
Bobridge blitzed the field taking out the gold medal in the under-23 national time trial in 36 minutes, 3.11 seconds at the Buninyong course, near Ballarat.
The Beijing Olympian then went on to win the gruelling 122.4km under-23 men’s road race in 3 hours, 12 minutes, 48 seconds.
Bobridge said the hard work and commitment in training at the AIS was starting to pay off.
‘I am quite stoked to get my first under-23 individual title at the Australian Open Road Championships and I think this could be the start of bigger and better things on the road,’ Bobridge said.
The AIS team scored a trifecta in the men’s under-23 time trial with Travis Meyer claiming the silver medal in 36:10:30 and Michael Matthews in 36:10:95.
Matthews also produced an outstanding result by finishing second in the men's under-23 road race behind Bobridge in a dead heat with Victoria’s Mark O’Brien.
AIS cyclist Peta Mullens put in a great performance winning gold in the under-23 women’s road race. Other top results include AIS cyclists Tiffany Cromwell claiming the bronze medal and Carlee Taylor finishing fourth.
The race for excellence continues as Bobridge and Meyer prepare for the Tour Down Under from 18–25 January 2009.
