AIS scholarship holder Ashley Delaney has set a new Commonwealth record on his way to winning gold at the Telstra Australian Short Course Championships in Tasmania.

Delaney won the 200m men’s backstroke, recording a time of 1:49.62.

The champion swimmer, who had returned from holiday in Turkey after competing at the world championships in Rome, was delighted by the victory.

‘I didn't swim the whole time I was in Turkey, so the holiday has obviously done me some good,’ Delaney said. ‘It was nice to get back in the pool and record a fast time.’
