Former AIS scholarship holder Michael Sim is one win away from gaining promotion to the US PGA Tour.

The 24-year-old took out the BMW Charity Open when he defeated Argentina’s Fabian Gomez at the first sudden-death play-off in California.

The victory worth $168,000 has now pushed Sim’s earnings for the year to $489,600 in just seven starts.

He now leads the next golfer Garth Mulroy by $281,500.

Never before has the distance between the top two golfers on the secondary tour been so great.

‘I had a great off season and sat down with my coach and mapped out my goals for the year,’ Sim said.

‘My main goal was to win three times and finish No.1 on the money list.’

‘I’m now only one win away from being on the US PGA Tour and that would be a dream come true for me.’

Sim was a scholarship holder at the AIS Golf program in Melbourne from 2002-03.
