Smith and Morrison claim gold medal at Canoe World Cup

Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) athletes David Smith and Luke Morrison are celebrating victory after winning the gold medal in the men's K2 1000 metre event of the Canoe Sprint World Cup 3 in Szeged, Hungary from 5-7 June.

Smith and Morrison timed their race perfectly in the men’s K2 1000 metre race, taking the lead at the 750 metre mark and surging ahead to claim victory in the time of 3 minutes 38.001 seconds.

Morrison and Smith were ecstatic with the win. 

‘To win the gold at this World Cup is an amazing feeling,’ Smith said.

Olympian Ken Wallace claimed the silver medal in the men’s K1 1000 metres event in 3 minutes 47.6 seconds, just half a second behind the winner Sweden’s Anders Gustavsson.

Wallace was thrilled by his first medal placing in a World Cup.

‘That was a long race. It felt like a ski race with all the waves but I am happy to win my first world cup medal over a thousand metres,’ Wallace said.

Matt Goble also claimed a silver medal in the men’s K1 200 metres event in 37.108 seconds.

It proved to be an impressive performance for the 20-year-old Goble competing in his first World Cup event. 

In other results Wallace finished in sixth place in the men’s K1 500 metre in 1 minute 44.66 seconds.

Hannah Davis and Lyndsie Fogarty also finished in sixth place in 1 minute 47 seconds in the final of the women’s K2 500 metre event. 

Alana Nicholls, Lisa Russ, Hannah Davis and Lyndsie Fogarty combined to finish fourth in the final of women’s K4 500 metre in 1 minute 47.544 seconds, just missing out on a medal placing.

Chris Alagich, Chad Alston, Matthew Urquhart and Reece Baker teamed up to claim fifth place in the final of the men’s K4 1000 metre event in 3 minutes 16.490 seconds.

Jacob Clear and Murray Stewart finished in fourth place of the men’s K2 100 metres event.

They also came fifth in the final of the men’s K2 500 metre event in 1 minute 37.559 seconds.
