AFL General Manager — Game Development David Matthews today announced that recently retired Geelong Cats captain Tom Harley has accepted a role with the AFL.

Harley will join the AIS/AFL Academy as an assistant coach and mentor.

The announcement follows the recent appointments of Michael O’Loughlin, Matthew Lloyd and Garry Lyon to the AFL’s talented player programs.

In an outstanding AFL career Harley played 198 matches, captained the Geelong Cats to two premierships (in 2007 and 2009) and was named vice-captain of the All-Australian team in 2008.  

‘The AIS/AFL Academy is one of the elite steps in the talented player pathway and the appointment of recently retired players as mentors has been most valuable for young players preparing for a career in the AFL,’ Mr Matthews said.

‘Throughout his career, Tom has established himself as one of the AFL’s most respected players, setting a positive example both on and off the field.

‘His leading role in the anti-violence “Just Think” campaign is testament to his strong character and ability as a positive role-model for our emerging talent.’

Tom Harley said he said he was looking forward to commencing his role with the AIS/AFL Academy.

‘After 11 seasons with the Geelong Football Club I feel I have a lot to offer the game’s elite young players. I am excited about the challenge of working with young players to become better footballers and assisting in their development as leaders off the field,’ Harley said.

AIS Director Professor Peter Fricker said the appointment of Tom Harley as Assistant Coach was a major boost to the AIS/AFL Academy Program.

‘Tom has proven himself to be a quality AFL player and Captain of the Geelong Football Club, his tremendous knowledge and experience of the game will undoubtedly help our group of talented footballers reach their potential,’ Professor Fricker said.

‘The AIS, through its partnership with the Australian Football League, continues to help strengthen Australian football through the development of talented young athletes.’

Harley will attend his first AIS/AFL Academy camp on November 28 at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
