Big wins for Institute archers at national youth titles
Four AIS archers Ryan Tyak, Taylor Worth, Benjamin Nott and Alice Ingley have continued their impressive start to 2010 by winning four medals at the 2010 Youth Nationals being held at the Whiteman Park Archery Centre in Perth from 4 to 5 April.
Australia’s finest junior archers had to contend with varying conditions across the two days of competition with strong winds hampering shooting on the first day, before calmer conditions on the final day.
In the Junior Men’s Recurve Bow event, Tyack led a clean sweep of the medals for the AIS, winning the event ahead of AIS team-mates Worth in second place and Nott in third.
All competitors faced 36 shots per day over 90, 70, 50 and 30-metre distances.
Tyack held his nerve on the final day, after establishing a good lead in the tricky conditions on 4 April, to finish with a total of 2,453 points. This lead was enough to hold off Worth, who after struggling with his accuracy on 4 April, finished strongly with a final total of 2,411 points. This included producing a tournament record of 89 10-point scores.
Nott was only a further nine arrows back in third place, with a score of 2,402 points.
Ingley surged to a 155 arrow victory in the equivalent women’s event to re-affirm her status as Australia’s number-one junior female archer.
She was the strongest archer across all 70, 60, 50, 30-metre distances over both days to finish with a total of 2,390 points.
Tyack, Worth, Nott and Ingley can now all focus on the 2010 Commonwealth Games trials, Here they continue their bid to for selection in the Australian Commonwealth Games team.
Three national selection camps have already been held at the AIS, while five further camps will be held between now and July 2010, before the team is named.
AIS Archery Head Coach Simon Fairweather says the results are a positive step forward for the AIS archers.
’The first day was really, really windy so it made it difficult for everyone,’ Fairweather said. ’The second day was more indicative of how everyone is progressing and how well they are shooting.
’Even though it was the junior nationals, in the scheme of things, it was not the most important event and the whole group has their sights set on the Commonwealth Games.'
