Australian women’s softball team finishes sixth in world championship
The Australian women’s softball team (Aussie Spirit) has finished a credible sixth place in the overall standings at the 2010 ISF World Championships held in Caracas, Venezuela from 23 June to 2 July.
Australia won its first play off game 3–2 against the Netherlands but narrowly lost its final game 2–3 to Canada in the play off final.
In the lead-up to the playoffs Australia performed strongly winning five (out of seven) games against China, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, New Zealand and Botswana in the preliminary rounds of Pool B.
16 current Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) athletes played in the Aussie Spirit team, which included Jodie Bowering, Chelsea Forkin, Leah Parry, Karina Cannon, Leigh Godfrey Stacey Porter (Captain), Kylie Cronk (Vice Captain), Verity Long-Doppert, Justine Smethurst, Clare Currie, Tracey Mosley Danielle Stewart, Lauren Daykin, Aimee Murch, Clare Warwick, Brenda De Blaes and Kaia Parnaby.
The Aussie Spirit squad is in a re-building phase with 13 out of 17 players making their debut at the 2010 ISF World Championship.
