AIS swimmer Tommaso D’Orsogna has helped the Australian men’s 4x100m freestyle relay team wrestle back the Commonwealth Games title in a thrilling relay at the Dr S.P.M Aquatics Complex.

Australia, who was forced into the silver medal position four years ago in Melbourne behind South Africa, is looking to build a strong team ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games and from this performance they seem to be heading in the right direction.

D’Orsogna combined with Eamon Sullivan, Kyle Richardson and James Magnussen to win by more than second from England in a time of 3:13.92, while South Africa settled for bronze.

Richardson had led off the relay in a time of 49.23, before handing over to Sullivan who flew through the water to record the quartet’s fastest split time of 47.49.

Sullivan handed over to 19 year old D’Orsogna with a slender advantage and the AIS based athlete let no one down with a split of 48.63 to maintain the lead for the race favourites.

Anchorman Magnussen completed the victory for the Australian team to announce their intentions for the coming years and winning Australia’s third gold medal for the night in the pool.

In earlier races Kylie Palmer had won Australia’s first gold medal of the 2010 Commonwealth Games with victory in the women’s 200m freestyle, Alicia Coutts and Emily Seebohm finished first and second in the women’s 200m individual medley, and Ryan Napoleon claimed a superb silver medal in the men’s 400m freestyle, despite battling a case of Delhi-belly.
