Delaney wins gold at Australian Short Course Championships
Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) swimmer Ashley Delaney has won gold in the men’s 100m backstroke final at the Australian Short Course Championships being held in Brisbane.
Delaney proved too strong for Olympic medallist Hayden Stoeckel smashing into the wall in 51.41 with Daniel Arnamnart third in 52.14.
Meanwhile, fellow AIS swimmer Belinda Hocking has won silver in the women’s 100m backstroke recording a time of 57.67.
Hocking finished second behind Emily Seebohm who broke the Australian record set by Marieke Guehrer during last year’s FINA World Cup in Singapore.
Seebohm recorded an incredible 56.58, taking 0.39 off Guehrer’s previous record.
Five-time Beijing Paralympic gold medallist Matthew Cowdrey (AIS) knocked 0.54 of a second off his morning swim to claim gold in the final of the men’s multi class 50m butterfly.
Finishing strongly in 26.61, Cowdrey was too good for three-time Beijing Paralympic gold medallist Peter Leek with fellow Paralympian Matthew Levy taking bronze.
