Fergus Kavanagh - Hockey

Fergus KavanaghSince Fergus Kavanagh debuted for the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks in 2005 it has been full steam ahead for the talented midfielder.

Fergus played his first international game in 2007, for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, and has been a regular member of the defence for the Kookaburras, the national men’s team, ever since.

Going from fringe player to a permanent fixture of the Kookaburras, Fergus’s ‘do or die’ attitude has seen him push through the ranks at a rapid rate.
At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Fergus made a solid contribution to the team, including scoring two goals. In the semifinal Australia led Spain 2–0 into the second half, only for the Spanish to catch fire and win 3–2. The Kookaburras rebounded well in the bronze medal final to trounce traditional rivals the Netherlands 6–2. The bronze was Australia’s fifth consecutive men’s hockey medal at the Olympics.

Fergus replaced Bevan George as the Thundersticks leader following the Olympic gold medallist’s retirement from the position after Beijing, and he is determined to push the team’s boundaries towards success.

In 2009 Fergus was part of the gold medal winning team in the Melbourne ABN AMRO Champions Trophy. At the end of 2009 he held the record of 74 caps and 13 goals for the year. He was also an integral part of the Kookaburras World Cup gold medal victory in New Delhi earlier this year.

Fergus is currently a member of the leadership group (holding the position of co-captain) and is part of the Kookaburras team who will defend their gold medal title at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Stay tuned as Fergus and his team-mates campaign for gold in Delhi.
