Australia has claimed nine more medals on the second day of the swimming program at the Dr S.P.M Aquatics Complex as Australia’s new generation of swimmers showed their hand in Delhi.

Australia took one gold medal, five silver and three bronze to add to the already impressive medal tally at the aquatic centre.

18-year-old Leiston Pickett stole the show in the women’s 50m breaststoke as her lightning opening allowed her to hold off Leisel Jones as Australia claimed first and second. Pickett touched in a time of 30.84 to lead home the barnstorming Jones, who touched in 31.10.

The men’s 200m freestyle final produced the race of the evening as no fewer than six swimmers were locked in a tense battle with 50m remaining.

Kenrick Monk was touched out by 0.02 seconds by Scotland’s Robbie Renwick for the gold medal, while AIS swimmer Thomas Fraser-Holmes won the bronze medal at his first Commonwealth Games.

Australia had three finalists in the men’s 50m backstroke with Matthew Arnamnart, Hayden Stoeckel and AIS based Ashley Delaney all aiming for medals.

English world champion Ryan Tancock cruised to the gold medal from Lane 7, while Stoeckel took silver and Delaney won the bronze medal.

The women’s 50m butterfly final brought two more medals for Australia as Marieke Guehrer flew to silver and Emily Seebohm added a bronze medal to the silver medal she won in the women’s 200m individual medley. Fifteen year old young gun, Yolane Kukla, finished in 4th place in her first Commonwealth Games final.
Annabelle Williams capped off another stellar night for Australia with a silver medal in the women’s 50m freestyle Para Sport S9.
The team’s performance must be considered even stronger considering six members have been struck down by the Delhi-belly.
