Felicity Galvez has upstaged 2009 Telstra Swimmer of the Year and world champion Jessicah Schipper at the Telstra Short Course Championships in Brisbane, winning the 200m butterfly in 2:04.76.

The reigning 50 and 100m FINA World Short Course champion went out in 58.74 before storming home in 1:06.02, to beat Kawana Waters’ swimmer Sam Hamill (2:06.18) and Schipper, who had to settle for bronze in 2:07.12.

In ominous signs for her competition the 25-year-old Galvez, who is set to contest her fourth FINA World Short Course championship in Dubai in December if selected, didn’t nominate the 200m butterfly as a priority coming into the event.

“I don’t really train for the 200m butterfly so to get the win gives me great confidence going into the rest of the meet,” Galvez said.

“It’s a great honour to win a national title. We are so strong as a swimming nation, so to get up and win gold is just fantastic. It really does mean a lot to me.”

Meanwhile, AIS swimmer Tommaso D’Orsogna has finished second in the men’s 200m freestyle recording a time of 1:45.22.

Olympian Nick Ffrost touched first in 1:45.12 with Kyle Richardson (1:45.50) third.
