Injury forces Monckton out of Commonwealth Games
Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) gymnast Mary-Anne Monckton has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming Commonwealth Games and world championships after sustaining a lower leg injury during training.
The 15-year-old landed on the edge of a tumbling strip, forcing a short landing which resulted in a rupture of the ligament between the tibia and fibula (Tibiofibular Syndesmosis).
Reserve Georgia Wheeler from Victoria will now replace Monckton in the Delhi team.
Monckton recently returned from a year on the sidelines after having a small bone removed from each of her ankles.
She returned with vigour in 2010 and in her first year at senior level, surprised many to finish in second place in the all-around competition at the 2010 Australian Championships in July.
Australian women’s head coach Peggy Liddick shared Monckton’s disappointment but said her future remained bright.
"I am extremely disappointed for Mary-Anne as she has overcome so much to achieve selection,” Liddick said.
“It’s unfortunate that such a routine movement in training has this result. Elite sport is a gamble and Mary-Anne was not lucky this time out.”
“This type of injury is fully recoverable with the proper rest and treatment, so I look forward to Mary-Anne's contribution to the 2011 national team.”
“Mary-Anne is saddened for herself, but wishes the teams the very best in Delhi and Rotterdam."
