Kookaburra’s make light work of Scotland

06 Oct 2010

The Kookaburra’s have started their 2010 Commonwealth Games campaign with an emphatic 9-0 victory over Scotland at the MDC National Stadium.

In the slightly cooler morning conditions with the game commencing at 8.30am local time, Scotland started brightly, moving forward well, but as soon as Luke Doerner knocked in Australia’s first goal after 14 minutes, the flood gates opened for the world’s best team.

The Kookaburra’s, who are AIS scholarship holders, are aiming for their fourth consecutive gold medal in the Commonwealth Games since its inception in 1998 and this start will give the team confidence for its remaining pool matches.

Doerner was the star for the Kookaburra’s with a hat-trick of penalty corner goals, hitting one before the break and his second two after the break.

The Kookaburra’s led 5-0 at the half time interval through Doerner’s goal and further goals from Chris Cirello (2), Rob Hammond and Trent Mitton.

After the break Simon Orchard and Des Abbott contributed to the scoresheet in an overall good performance.

The Kookaburra’s will take on hosts India on Thursday, before playing their remaining group matches against Pakistan and Malaysia ahead of the medal rounds.
