Moffatt crowned triathlon world series champion
Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) triathlete Emma Moffatt has won her second consecutive world title after a superb performance in the final of the ITU World Championship Series, in Budapest, Hungary.
While Moffatt finished in second place, behind AIS team-mate Emma Snowsill in the final race of the seven-round series, she won the overall points standings for the championship to claim the series crown.
‘I think the second title definitely means more than the first,’ Moffatt said.
'I don’t know that it has really sunk in yet though. I’m really happy about my finish and also really happy to see another Aussie get the win today. It was a great day for Australia.’
In the final points tally, Moffatt was on top with 3806, followed by Switzerland’s Nicola Spirig (3413) and Sweden’s Lisa Norden (3390).
She becomes only the third Australian to win successive world series titles since the official Olympic-distance championships — 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run — began in 1989, after Michellie Jones (1992–93) and Snowsill (2005–06).
It proved an incredible final round result for the Australian women’s triathlon team with Emma Jackson and Ashleigh Gentle winning the under-23 and junior races respectively.
In other results for AIS athletes, Brad Kahlefeldt finished in fifth place in the men’s final, third place overall.
