Cameron Meyer has produced a sensational ride in the men’s 40km points race to claim gold at the I.G Sports Complex on Day 4 of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The 22-year-old AIS athlete from Perth finished with a massive total of 89 points, some 37 points clear of silver medallist from England, George Atkins, while the Isle of Man’s Mark Christian claimed bronze with 37 points.

Meyer, who is the current world champion in the event, having won in both 2009 and 2010, started the race conservatively as the New Zealand trio claimed first, second and third in the first of 16 sprints across the 160 lap race.

The rising star of Australian track cycling then showed his class as he made a break away with four other cyclists to pick up 20 points after lapping the field.
Meyer’s pace in the breakaway was commanding, and despite expending energy in the breakaway, Meyer still looked head and shoulders above his rivals as he continued to add to his lead. Just when the field was looking for ways of cutting into his lead, Meyer broke again with two other cyclists to gain another lap and give himself an unassailable lead.

Meyer was not done however, and just to rub salt into the wounds of the best of the Commonwealth, Meyer broke for a third time and once again reeled in the peleton. He completed his victory with a final sprint win and celebrated with a punch in the air.

On another sensational night on the track for Australia, 19-year-old Megan Dunn won the 25km women’s point race in a much tighter race than Meyer’s.

It was a job well done for the Dubbo teenager, who finished on 45 points, five clear of New Zealand’s Lauren Ellis, while world champion Tara Alice Whitten of Canada was four points further back.

Australia’s third gold medal of the night was won by the supreme combination of Kaarle McCulloch and Anna Meares.

The AIS pair which has taken all before them in the last year, showed why they were crowned world champions in the women’s team sprint, as they comfortably won the Commonwealth title ahead of Scotland.
