World champions named in Australian cycling team for Commonwealth Games
Past and present Australian Institute of Sport athletes are among seven current world champions that have been selected in a stellar 27-strong cycling team to represent Australia at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Current world champions and AIS athletes Anna Meares, Michael Hepburn, Ashlee Ankudinoff, Kaarle McCulloch, Josephine Tomic and Cameron Meyer along with ex-AIS athlete Jack Bobridge have been named in the Australian track cycling team for the Commonwealth Games.
They will join AIS team-mates Daniel Ellis, Scott Sunderland, Jason Niblett, Emily Rosemond, Megan Dunn and Belinda Goss who are making their debut in the Australian track cycling team.
AIS athlete Carly Light * has been named in the Australian women’s road cycling team, which includes: Ruth Corset, Rochelle Gilmore, Chloe Hosking and Alexis Rhodes. The Australian men’s road cycling team will feature Allan Davis, Matthew Hayman, Richie Porte, Mark Renshaw and Chris Sutton.
Meares, Perkins, Davis and Hayman are the only team members who have competed previously at the Commonwealth Games.
Cycling Australia High Performance Manager, Paul Brosnan is confident the Australian team will perform strongly at the Games.
‘Of course we have high expectations because we are going to Delhi with quality athletes so we expect quality performances,’ Brosnan said.
‘On the track we have a lot of depth and whilst there are some with Games experience it's a predominantly young team.’
We expect New Zealand will be very strong and although the UK teams might have some big names missing they will use that chance to expose their youngsters to this level of racing.’
‘That's also good for us to be able to go up against some new talent and see where their program is headed.’
* Recent injury means her participation is now in doubt.
