Six current and former Australian Institute of Sport athletes have been selected in an 8-strong Australian tennis team, when the sport makes its debut at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, starting in Delhi from 3 October.

AIS scholarship holder Sally Peers will join a host of former AIS athletes Jessica Moore, Olivia Rogowska, Matt Ebden, Greg Jones and Peter Luczak  who have been named in the squad, which also includes Paul Hanley and Anastasia Rodionova.

Coach of the Australian men’s team Scott Draper says he’s confident the squad can achieve success at the Games.
‘We have a balanced blend of experience, talent and youthful exuberance that will hold us in good shape against the other Commonwealth nations,’ Draper.

‘We will definitely be aiming for medals.’

Coach of the Australian women’s team Nicole Pratt expects the Australian players will perform strongly.
‘Sally, Olivia and Jess have all had experience at Grand Slam level so they understand the requirements of tennis on the big stage. I know they will acquit themselves well.’

Australia is expected to enter a maximum of three players in both 32-strong singles competitions and two pairs in each of the three doubles draws, including mixed doubles.
The AIS Tennis program, in partnership with Tennis Australia, supports the development of talented athletes by providing access to leading coaching and sport science expertise and world-class training facilities, including newly constructed clay courts modelled on the French Open surface.

The AIS Pro-Tour program is providing an opportunity for talented tennis players to gain valuable experience in making the transition to the international level.
