Coutts brings home the gold!
AIS swimmer Alicia Coutts has produced a stunning second half of the women’s 200m Individual Medley to claim gold ahead of team mate Emily Seebohm in a new Commonwealth Games record.
Coutts entered the final in Lane 4 after the quickest heat swim, but current World Champion Seebohm was always going to be dangerous from Lane 3 and set the tone from the opening butterfly leg.
The 18 year old swimming sensation held just under a body length lead over Coutts after the butterfly and backstroke legs, but Brisbane born Coutts surged past Seebohm in the breaststroke leg to reverse the lead to the same margin in her favour.
Coutts proved she is a world class athlete herself with a freestyle leg that gave Seebohm no chance to reel her in, touching in a time of 2:09.70.
The new Commonwealth mark was over three seconds under Stephanie Rice’s winning time from four years ago and 1.13 seconds ahead of silver medallist Seebohm.
Coutts will now turn her attention to the 100m butterfly and freestyle races as she aims to add to her medal tally.
