Medals flood in for Australian swimmers

The Australian Swimming Team has continued their successful meet at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, picking up another 12 medals on an actioned packed night at the Dr S.P.M Aquatics Complex in Delhi.

AIS athlete Alicia Coutts continued to be the star of the swimming pool as she scooped another gold medal, this time in the women’s 100m freestyle.

Coutts, 23, stopped the clock in 54.09 to pip Australian team mate Emily Seebohm by 0.21 seconds. Seebohm bounced back however in the women’s 100m backstroke final, claiming her first gold of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, and taking her individual tally to four medals.

AIS athlete Matthew Cowdrey brought the crowd to their feet with the only world record of the swimming meet to date winning the 50m freestyle (S9) in a time of 25.33secs.

AIS backstroker Ashley Delaney secured bronze in the men’s 200m backstroke despite battling the after-effects of Delhi Belly, while the Australian women’s breaststrokers claimed gold, silver and bronze in the 200m event. Leisel Jones held off team mates Tessa Wallace and Sarah Katsoulis to claim her first gold in Delhi.

Christian Sprenger secured a silver medal in the men’s 100m breaststroke, while former AIS swimmer Brenton Rickard won the bronze medal.

AIS swimmer Bronte Barratt swam the third leg in the gold medal winning Australian women’s 4x200m freestyle that also featured Kylie Palmer, Blair Evans and Meagan Nay.

In the final race of the night, the Australian men’s 4x200m relay team won the gold medal by four seconds over Scotland and South Africa.
18-year-old Thomas Fraser Holmes flew the AIS flag in the race, while former AIS athlete Nicholas Ffrost also swam a solid leg. Ryan Napoleon and Kenrick Monk completed the relay team.
