Australian and AIS cycling superstar Anna Meares has completed her perfect Commonwealth Games by winning gold in the women’s sprint at the I.G Sports Complex.

Meares headlined another dominant Australian display on the track which saw four more gold medals won by the green and gold in the penultimate night of cycling at the velodrome.

Meares, having already won the women’s time trial and women’s team sprint, breezed through the early rounds of the individual sprint, before booking her place in the final against Wales’ Becky James.

Meares only required two of the three races to complete her perfect Commonwealth Games and announce her intentions ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games. Fellow AIS athlete Emily Rosemond claimed the bronze medal over team mate Kaarle McCulloch.

Australia also underlined their pedigree in the men’s 4000m team pursuit with a dominant display to dismantle New Zealand in the gold medal match.

Australia, who are the current World Champions, boast a team with an average age of only 21 and their future seems bright. Jack Bobridge, Michael Hepburn, Cameron Meyer and Dale Parker started slightly slower than the New Zealand quarter but soon broke into a pulsating rhythm that allowed them to overtake the Kiwi’s on the final lap of the race.

Shane Perkins bounced back from his disappointment in the men’s keirin to get the better of fellow Australian Scott Sunderland in the best of three final series in the men’s sprint.

Perkins and Sunderland had both progressed to the final with classy displays in their semi-finals but Perkins had too much for Sunderland in both races for the gold medal.

Megan Dunn completed the perfect night for Australia with her second gold medal of the Games, claiming victory in the women’s scratch race. 19-year-old Dunn, fresh off her victory in the women’s point race on Wednesday evening, showed her ability by claiming gold ahead of New Zealand and England.

The track cycling program will conclude on Friday with the men’s team sprint, the women’s 3000m individual pursuit and the men’s 20km scratch race.
