Australia is closing in on its best ever medals haul in gymnastics at a Commonwealth Games after four more gold medals were won on Day 4 of competition at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

Australia currently has won seven gold medals, two silver and two bronze, while the current record lies at nine gold medals won at Kuala Lumpur in 1998.

AIS’ Lauren Mitchell once again stole the show as she won her third gold medal of the event, becoming the first Australian gymnast to win three gold medals at a single Games.

Mitchell secured a tight victory over AIS team mate Georgia Bonera in the uneven bars. Her score of 14.15 edged Bonera who notched a 13.925.

Mitchell will look to add to her already impressive tally when she competes in her two favourite events this evening – the beam and floor – in which she won silver medals at the 2009 World Championships.

The men however showed there were not to be outdone with three individual gold medals of their own. Thomas Pichler snared gold on the floor, Prashanth Sellathurai took gold in the pommel horse and Sam Offord prevailed on the rings.

Pichler, Sellathurai and Offord had all combined in the men’s team event on Monday to break Australia’s gold medal drought in the men’s team event.
