After day 5 of competition at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi it’s a case of blinded by the light as Australia’s gold medal tally soars to a total of 47 medals.

Comeback-king Geoff Huegill completed his fairytale return to competition by winning the 100m butterfly and setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 51.69 seconds.

15 year old Yolane Kukla won the 50m freestyle ahead of England’s Fran Halsall and New Zealand’s Hayley Palmer.

AIS athletes Alicia Coutts and Felicity Galvez swam to victory in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.

Leisel Jones, Sophie Edington, Megan Nay and paralympic swimmer Ben Austin (S8) all found gold to make it seven out of nine gold medals won in the pool overnight.

The Australian men's recurve archery team won gold after defeating number three-ranked Malaysia 219 points to 212. Matthew Gray, Mathew Masonwells (AIS) and Taylor Worth (AIS) grabbed the lead with both hands in the hot and humid conditions at the Yamuna Sports Complex in Delhi.

Despite Shane Perkins pulling out of the men’s sprint team the hastily assembled Australian trio of Daniel Ellis, Scott Sunderland and Jason Niblett showed no weakness as they rose to the challenge taking home the gold and setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 43.772 seconds.

AIS athlete Cameron Meyer again dominated the track winning his third gold medal in the men’s scratch race.

Our gymnasts continued their reign at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium with Lauren Mitchell and Josh Jefferis finding gold overnight.  The win on the balance beam takes Mitchell's golden tally to four. She fought hard to make it five gold medals but had to settle for silver in her final event on the floor as England’s Imogen Cairns' stole the show.

To shooting and Michael Diamond and Adam Vella shot a Commonwealth Games record to win a gold medal in the men's trap pairs. The pair scored 198 out of 200, with Diamond shooting a rare perfect score of 100 and Vella missing just two targets to score 98.

Laetisha Scanlan and Stacy Roiall of Australia also won the women's pairs shooting event making it a golden victory.
