Tennis aces claim swag of medals
Australia has capped off its tennis campaign at the 2010 Commonwealth Games with a total of eight medals being won by the green and gold.
In constant heat throughout the week at the R.K. Khanna Tennis Complex, Australia showed strong for across all disciplines to win three gold medals, three silver and two bronze.
Anastasia Rodionova was the standout performer for the Australian contingent as she claimed gold in the women’s singles and doubles, while also winning a silver medal in the mixed doubles.
In the singles, Rodionova defeated home town hopeful Sania Mirza to claim the Commonwealth Games title. It was a fitting clash for the tournament’s top two seeds and came down to a third set tie break.
Rodionova, the number one seed, took the first set 6-3, before Mirza battled back in the second to win it 6-2. In the third set tiebreak, Rodionova prevailed 7-3, in a set that lasted 67 minutes.
AIS athlete Sally Peers added to Australia’s success in the women’s singles with a bronze medal victory over AIS counterpart Olivia Rogowska. Peers triumphed 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.
Rodionova then teamed with Peers in the women’s doubles to add a second gold to her tally. Rodionova and Peers defeated the AIS combination of Jessica Moore and Rogowska in the final, winning another three set encounter, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
In the mixed doubles final, Rodionova partnered Paul Hanley, but the Australian pairing succumbed to Scotland, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.
In men’s action, former AIS athlete Greg Jones went down in straight sets in the gold medal match to Indian Somdev Devvarman. The top seed had too much firepower for Jones, winning 6-4, 6-2. Former AIS athlete Matt Ebden defeated Peter Luczak for the bronze medal.
Hanley and Luczak then combined however, to claim Australia’s third gold medal with a three set victory in the men’s doubles – 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
