Divers make a splash in Delhi
Australia has made a dominant start to the diving program at the 2010 Commonwealth Games with six medals already added to the overall Australian tally.
Melissa Wu and and Alexandra Croak led the way for Australia as they dived to gold in the women’s 10m platform synchronised .
Wu and Croak led from the first dive in the final to record a score of 335.76, seven points clear of the Malaysian pairing.
AIS athlete Briony Cole and Annabelle Smith finished in the bronze medal position on a score of 325.50. They held silver until their last dive, before the Malaysian’s nailed their final dive of the evening.
AIS pairing Sharleen Stratton and Briony Cole were superb as they claimed silver in the women’s 3m springboard synchronised.
Stratton and Cole completed a number of difficult dives in the final to take home the silver medal, but it was the Canadian pair who shone, as Jennifer Abel and Emilie Heymans easily won the gold medal.
The Canadian pair totalled 318.9 for their five dives in the final, while Australia finished on 300.84, some five points clear of the second Australian pairing, AIS athlete Olivia Wright and Jaele Patrick.
Matthew Mitcham and Scott Robertson rounded off the medal haul on the opening night of the diving program as they won silver and bronze in the men’s 1m springboard. Canadian Alexandre Despatie won gold with a total of 468.15 from his six dives, while Mitcham scored 441.00 and Robertson finished with 409.15.
