Hockeyroos head into the final
12 Oct 2010

The Hockeyroos have fought out an impressive semi-final victory over England to progress to the gold medal match in women’s hockey.

The Hockeyroos produced a sensational defensive display to win 1-0 in hot conditions at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

Captain Madonna Blyth produced the only goal of the game, scoring from a penalty corner shortly before the half time interval, but it was the defensive display of the AIS based Hockeyroos that draw the plaudits.

England piled on the pressure late in the game in a bid to take the fixture to extra time, but the Australian defense hung on strong to secure their shot at defending their gold from four years ago in Melbourne.

Australia will take on New Zealand in the final on Wednesday, and will look to win their third Commonwealth Games title from four attempts.

Meanwhile, Australia’s men will battle New Zealand today in the men’s semi-final, with a spot in the gold medal match up for grabs.

The Australian men’s team has won every Commonwealth Games since the sport’s inception in 1998 and will look to outmuscle their trans-tasman rivals.

Australia, who are the current World Champions, breezed through their pool games and will enter today’s match as firm favourites.
