Gymnasts show rhythm to break gold medal drought
The third last day of the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games saw Australia continue their medal rush, as medals were won across five different sports.
The Australian women’s team won gold in the rhythmic gymnastics team event with a brilliant display across all routines.
Naazmi Johnston, Janine Murray and Danielle Prince combined to win Australia’s first rhythmic gymnastics gold medal in 16 years, defeating two-time gold medallist England and Canada in the process. The three Australian girls raised the bar with tremendous performances in the ball, hoop, ribbon and rope.
Murray and Prince will look to add to their team gold medal in the individual all-around events today.
On the shooting range, Australia won two medals to take their overall tally to nine medals across all events contested to date.
Dina Aspandiyarova and Pamela McKenzie won the silver medal in the women’s 10m air pistol, while Warren Potent and David Clifton combined to win bronze in the men’s 50m rifle prone pairs. All four athletes will compete again today with Potent and Aspandiyarova genuine gold medal chances.
In athletics, Australia’s 4x400m relay team defended their gold medal from four years ago, while Jarrod Bannister defied a back injury to snare gold in the men’s javelin. Bannister’s win capped Australia’s first Commonwealth Games gold medal in javelin since 1962.
Australia’s third gold medal in athletics came with Alana Boyd in the women’s pole vault, which capped a clean sweep of pole vault after Steve Hooker’s win on Monday.
Australia also claimed two more silver medals in diving and the silver medal in the rugby sevens.
