In a fierce Trans-Tasman battle at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, Australia won the penalty flick-off after scores were locked at 2-2 both at full time and the end of extra time.

The gold medal won by the Hockeyroos means they have now collected gold on three of the four occasions hockey has been contested at Commonwealth Games level.

Jessica Nicole Arrold opening the scoring for the Hockeyroos in the 9th minute of the match, before New Zealand’s Samantha Harrison levelled the scores after 13 minutes of the second half.

Australia took the lead again with only 11 minutes remaining when Ashleigh Nelson found the back of the net, but in a pulsating final attack of the match, Kiwi Clarissa Eshuis levelled the match and took it to extra time.

In the penalty flick-off Australian goalkeeper Rachael Lynch was the hero as she saved New Zealand’s first shot, giving Australia an early advantage. Despite a miss from captain Madonna Blyth, the Hockeyroos held their nerve and ran away with a 4-2 victory to spark wild celebrations.

It was a tremendous victory for the AIS based Hockeyroos and gives the team confidence as they look to rebuild ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games.
