Mixed gold for Aussie duo
Australia has concluded its squash campaign at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games with four medals on the final day of competition.
AIS athlete Kasey Brown combined with former AIS player Cameron Pilley to win gold in the mixed doubles after a strong come from behind victory against New Zealand.
New Zealand won the first game 11-8 and led 3-0 in the second game before Brown and Pilley hit their straps to win it 11-7, before breezing through the decider 11-5 to win the gold medal.
Earlier in the day Brown had combined with fellow AIS athlete Donna Urquhart to win bronze in the women’s doubles, defeating the second Australian pairing of Lisa Camillieri and Amelia Pittock in three games, 11-4, 10-11, 11-5.
It was heartbreak however for Australian veteran and former number one David Palmer who claimed silver with partner Stewart Boswell in the men’s doubles. Palmer and Boswell fell to the gold medal favourites, Adrian Grant and Nick Matthew, 11-9, 6-11, 11-5.
Palmer had been looking to bow out of the sport with gold at the Commonwealth Games, one of the few titles that has eluded him over a stellar career.
Palmer with the silver medal, as well as the bronze he won earlier in the day with Urquhart, took his overall Commonwealth Games medal tally to six, which is joint best ever with Englishman Peter Nicol and Australian Rachel Grinham.
In Australia’s fourth squash medal of the day Pilley combined with AIS athlete Ryan Cuskelly to win bronze in the men’s doubles. They had too much skill and movement for Scotland, to win 11-5, 11.-7.
