Kookaburras crush India 8–0 to win fourth consecutive gold at Commonwealth Games

The Australian Kookaburras have won gold crushing India 8–nil with a stunning performance in the men’s hockey final at the Delhi Commonwealth Games. 

It was an incredible performance by Australia, which remained undefeated on its way to the  Gold medal victory.

Despite sweltering hot conditions, the Kookaburras dominated the final against the host nation, with Jason Wilson scoring the opening goal in the 16th minute. A minute later, Chris Ciriello doubled Australia’s lead through a penalty corner, followed by goals to Wilson and Luke Doerner.

Australia led 4–0 at halftime and continued to dominate after the break with four more goals to  Doerner, Simon Orchard, veteran Jamie Dwyer  and Glenn Turner to clinch a convincing victory. 

The win has delivered four consecutive gold medals for the Kookaburras at successive Games. It also capped off remarkable success for the men’s side in  2010, becoming the first Australian hockey team to win triple titles: the Commonwealth Games, World Cup and Champions Trophy in the same year. The Kookaburras have scored 25 wins in 26 competitive games over 2010.

16 current Australian Institute of Sport Scholarship holders played in the Kookaburras squad including, Desmond Abbott, Nathan Burgers, Joel Carroll, Christopher Ciriello, Liam De Young, Luke Doerner, Jamie Dwyer, Robert Hammond, Fergus Kavanagh, Mark Knowles, Trent Mitton, Edward Ockenden, Simon Orchard, Matthew Swann, Glenn Turner and Jason Wilson.

The AIS works in partnership with Hockey Australia in supporting the training and development of talented Australian male and female athletes and providing access to specialist coaching and sports science expertise, state-of-the-art training facilities.

AIS Hockey also provides a development pathway for talented players to gain valuable experience in high performance competition and to earn selection in the Australian national squad.
