ASC Statement re Trent Rawlins media comments
The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is surprised by comments made today by boxer Trent Rawlins considering we have been working closely with him and his representatives to resolve this matter.
The ASC believes it has been negotiating in good faith with Mr Rawlins and had been discussing a range of options, including inviting Mr Rawlins to advise us of the options that best suit his needs.
The ASC and AIS do not tolerate racial vilification and demand high standards.
The ASC is satisfied with the strong stance it took on the matter last year following the substantiation of a racial vilification complaint against AIS boxing coach, Bodo Andreass.
The behaviour Mr Andreass demonstrated was unacceptable and notwithstanding his apology, the ASC imposed tough sanctions against Mr Andreass including issuing a first and final warning, a $5,000 fine, formal counselling and cultural sensitivity training. Mr Andreass was also put on notice that any similar incidents in the future will result in losing his job.
In handing down these sanctions a range of factors were taken into account including Mr Andreass apologising, agreeing to mediation and this being the first racial vilification complaint in his 12 years service.
During this process the welfare of visiting boxer Mr Rawlins was of paramount concern and he was provided counselling and other support to help manage the situation and the ASC has continued to assist him with personal resolution.
The ASC remains committed to seeing through a constructive mediation process to reconcile the working relationship between both parties.
In regards to Mr Andreass’ role as an Australian boxing coach and selector, Boxing Australia is responsible for the selection processes and coaching appointments for national teams.
The ASC will be making no further comment on this matter.
