16-year-old Alethea Sedgman provided one of the highlights of the games to date on Thursday as she broke Australia’s shooting gold medal drought with victory in the women’s 50m Rifle 3 Position.

The teenager from Natimuk in rural Victoria produced a calm display beyond her years to take the title ahead of two Singapore shooters at the Dr. K.S Shooting Range.

Sedgman, who only started shooting four years ago after visiting a shooting range with her father, lay in second position after the qualifying round, two shots behind Singapore’s Aqilah Sudhir.

Sedgman however was on song in the final and had overtaken Sudhir after the first four shots of the 10 shot final. In her final six shots, Sedgman only dropped below a score of ten on one occasion to run away with the competition.

She finished on a combined score of 676, including an excellent score of 101 in the final. Singapore’s Xiang Wei Jasmine Ser took the silver medal on 672.6, while Sudhir won the bronze medal on 671.3.

Sedgman’s performance led a rise in fortune for the Australian shooters, with Bruce Quick and David Chapman snaring bronze in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol.

Quick and Chapman finished on a total of 1125, 37 points behind gold medallists, India.

Russell Mark qualified for the final of the men’s double trap but shot 41 out of 50 targets in the final to finish in 5th position.
