The Australian Commonwealth Games team consists of approximately 370 athletes, more than 95 of whom are AIS scholarship holders.

AIS Director, Professor Peter Fricker OAM, said the Institute was extremely proud of the contribution its athletes have made to Australian Commonwealth Games teams.

'Our athletes have made a significant contribution to Australia's sporting success over the years.  Since the AIS was established in 1981, 769 athletes have represented Australia at Commonwealth Games as current or former AIS athletes’ said Professor Fricker.

‘Collectively, AIS athletes have won 522 Commonwealth Games medals and we're confident that tally will continue to grow at this week’s Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.’

This year several ASC/AIS staff members will also be representing Australia at the Games.  These include; 400 meter hurdler Brendan Cole, hammer thrower Tim Driesen, shot putter’s Joanne Mirtschin and Hamish McDonald (F34/52/53).

'It is always a momentous achievement for any athlete to represent their country and we will follow the fortunes of our athletes and staff at the Games with great pride and admiration’ said Professor Fricker.
