Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) athlete Taylor Worth has won his first national title defeating AIS team-mate Ryan Tyack in the men’s individual recurve event at the Australian national archery championships at Mount Petrie in Belmont, Brisbane on 20 May.

Worth claimed a narrow victory, with a combined total score of 2572 points, finishing just one point ahead of Tyack.  AIS team-mate Jesse McDonald finished in third place (2528 points).

Worth was thrilled with the win.

‘It’s my first win at the national titles and provides a tremendous confidence boost in the lead up to selection trials for the Commonwealth Games,’ said Worth

Worth has been steadily improving his technique, training under the guidance of AIS and national head coach Simon Fairweather.

In other strong results for AIS athletes, Semra Ferguson claimed silver in the women’s individual recurve event, her first medal at the nationals, with a total score of 2555 points, just 20 points behind Western Australia’s Deonne Bridger.

AIS archers are currently competing in national selection trials over eight rounds, contested between men’s and women’s recurve and compound archers as part of the qualification process for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games (3–14 October).

A final squad of 12 archers in both men’s and women’s recurve and compound events will be named in the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games, which is expected to be announced in June.
