The Australian Institute of Sport has extended its women’s hockey scholarship base to 30 athletes as it prepares for the 2011 season.

A further 20 athletes were added to the initial 10 that that had been selected by incoming AIS and Australia women’s coach Adam Commens.

The 30 scholarship holders will commence their scholarships at various stages during February, with eight scholarship holders’ chosen as development and junior athletes who have been earmarked for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Without any time to settle in to their new environment, a large bulk of the new AIS squad will don the green and gold for the Australian Hockeyroos tour of Argentina in February.

Argentina, who is currently ranked number one in the world, will host a four nation’s tournament, also featuring Germany and the USA.

Scholarships offers will be reviewed at the conclusion of the Australian Hockey League in May.
