Current and former Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) cyclists have taken out ten national titles at the 2011 Cycling Australia Track National Championships. The gold medal winners included Jack Bobridge, Luke Durbridge, Rohan Dennis, Damien Howson, Anna Meares, Josephine Tomic, Glenn O’Shea and Kaarle McCulloch. The championships were held at the Dunc Gray Velodrome in Sydney on 30 January–6 February.

Josephine Tomic had her first win in the women’s individual pursuit on 2 February, recording a time of 3 minutes, 34.82 seconds. She went on to also win the women’s 25 kilometre point race on 3 February. She collected her third gold on 5 February with South Australia’s Mellissa Hoskins and Isabella King in the women’s team pursuit.

Meanwhile, former AIS scholarship holder Jack Bobridge was setting the track on fire as he smashed the men’s individual pursuit world record with his qualifying time of 4 minutes, 10.53 seconds. He beat the previous mark of 4 minutes, 11.11 seconds; recorded by the United Kingdom’s Chris Boardman in 1996.

‘I can't really explain it at the moment, I am still stunned,’ Bobridge said. ‘I didn’t think that [record] was going to come for a long time, I certainly didn’t think it would come while I was on the track.
‘To come around and see that on the board, I was honestly quite shocked.’

McCulloch won her first gold on 2 February with NSW cyclist Cassandra Kell in the women’s team sprint with a time of 34.13 seconds. She won her second gold with a dominant performance in the women’s 500 metre time trial on 3 February.

Rohan Dennis, Damien Howson and Glenn O’Shea teamed up with South Australian Edward Bissaker to win the team pursuit (Southcott Cup) on 4 Feburary, shortly before Anna Meares claimed her fifth sprint national title. A day later Meares won the women’s kieren and Luke Durbridge finished off the AIS’s gold run with his victory in the 40 kilometre points race.

National Talent Identification and Development (NTID) athletes also performed strongly at the nationals: Taylah Jennings won the women’s under-19 scratch race and the keiren, and Tim McMillan won the under-19 sprint and keiren races. Former NTID athlete Rick Sanders claimed gold in both the under-19 time trial and team pursuit.

NTID is an Australian Sports Commission program designed to help sports identify talented athletes and prepare them for participation in domestic, national and eventually, international competition.
